Shortly after the previous update our location got hit with some pretty nasty weather. Power outages, road closures, snow and ice, etc. Whenever we got into port and turned on our phones, we’d get alerts from the the county’s 911 network telling us to stay home and not go anywhere because the roads were impassable.… Continue reading Four Months of Bad Weather

Sealed!
The doors and windows have all been installed! The front doors are reminiscent of closet doors, but with lots of light. The lofts are way more spacious than I had really been expecting. There’s going to be plenty of room for stuff up here!
Watertight
Visited the site this morning to meet with the builder and the fireplace installer. They’re both pleased to be putting in a wood burning stove instead of the big, ostentatious propane thing. The plumber’s been out and installed one of the bathtubs; we reckon he’ll be back to do the other one soon. Meanwhile, the… Continue reading Watertight
More Progress
Construction on the ADU is at the point where we’re about ready for a plumber to show up and start putting in the pipes that are going to live in the walls. Sinks and laundry are easy - you just put your taps at a place and then when it’s time to install a fixture… Continue reading More Progress
Four Walls and a Floor

In on the Ground Floor
The ADU now has a subfloor covering the foundation. This probably means that the plumbing and electrical conduit running via what is now the crawlspace is done. The above picture is from the front of the ADU, looking north. Those piers in the foreground are footings for the deck that will eventually be here. Below… Continue reading In on the Ground Floor
Water works
One of the things that really irks me when people ask about the rebuild progress is the topic of fire inspections. In our old house, we had sprinklers. We had a fire hydrant right next to the driveway. We had 10k gallons of water in a tank on a hill above the house, so it… Continue reading Water works
Start Building
The second, lower, retaining wall is in place, and the backfill has been compacted. Now there’s a nice level path between the walls — it should look quite nice with some potted plants, don’t you think? As well as the retaining wall, the guys have laid down the first layer of wood on the ADU… Continue reading Start Building
